Since 2000 there has been a steady increase in the demand for more facilities to walk and bike. While working at Westerville, I was able to develop projects to improve the safety of pedestrian crossings with rectangular rapid flashing beacons and high visibility pavement markings at crosswalks. These projects were identified through my work on the mobility plan and requests from the public.
Pedestrian & Bicycle Crossing Guidelines
Due to the increasing number of requests for improved pedestrian and bicycle crossings I developed a document with specific guidance to determine the appropriate treatments to be used. This guidance was based upon FHWA “Guide for Improving Pedestrian Safety at Uncontrolled Crossing Locations.”
County Line Rd & Towers Trail Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon
The highly traveled Towers Trail crossing of County Line Road in Westerville had been in need of an improved pedestrian crossing. The addition of the first Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon was a priority after the approval of the Mobility Plan. In 2020, the PHB began operation and was promoted heavily on the website with educational materials.
ODOT’s Multimodal Design Guide
As the Subject Matter Expert for ODOT, I have been involved in providing design guidance for projects throughout Ohio. Each six months, I identify and develop any updates needed to keep the manual up to date with the latest research and national guidance.
